[Linker Error] SERIOUS PROBLEMS!

Since i can’t run anything higher than openGL 1.4 on my system, i am reading Red Book 3rd Edition. Here is the first example in the book.

#include <GL/gl.h>
#include <GL/glut.h>

void display(void)
{
/*  clear all pixels  */
    glClear (GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT);

/* draw white polygon (rectangle) with corners at
 *  (0.25, 0.25, 0.0) and (0.75, 0.75, 0.0)
 */
    glColor3f (1.0, 1.0, 1.0);
    glBegin(GL_POLYGON);
        glVertex3f (0.25, 0.25, 0.0);
        glVertex3f (0.75, 0.25, 0.0);
        glVertex3f (0.75, 0.75, 0.0);
        glVertex3f (0.25, 0.75, 0.0);
    glEnd();

/*  don't wait!
 * start processing buffered OpenGL routines
 */
    glFlush ();
}

void init (void)
{
/* select clearing (background) color */
    glClearColor (0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0);

/*  initialize viewing values  */
    glMatrixMode(GL_PROJECTION);
    glLoadIdentity();
    glOrtho(0.0, 1.0, 0.0, 1.0, -1.0, 1.0);
}

/*
 * Declare initial window size, position, and display mode
 * (single buffer and RGBA). Open window with “hello”
 * in its title bar. Call initialization routines.
 * Register callback function to display graphics.
 * Enter main loop and process events.
 */
int main(int argc, char** argv)
{
    glutInit(&argc, argv);
    glutInitDisplayMode (GLUT_SINGLE | GLUT_RGB);
    glutInitWindowSize (250, 250);
    glutInitWindowPosition (100, 100);
    glutCreateWindow (“hello”);
    init ();
    glutDisplayFunc(display);
    glutMainLoop();
    return 0; /* ISO C requires main to return int. */
}

I changed it a bit, since i use FreeGLUT…

#include <GL/freeglut.h>

void display(void)
{
/*  clear all pixels  */
    glClear (GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT);

/* draw white polygon (rectangle) with corners at
 *  (0.25, 0.25, 0.0) and (0.75, 0.75, 0.0)
 */
    glColor3f (1.0, 1.0, 1.0);
    glBegin(GL_POLYGON);
        glVertex3f (0.25, 0.25, 0.0);
        glVertex3f (0.75, 0.25, 0.0);
        glVertex3f (0.75, 0.75, 0.0);
        glVertex3f (0.25, 0.75, 0.0);
    glEnd();

/*  don't wait!
 * start processing buffered OpenGL routines
 */
    glFlush ();
}

void init (void)
{
/* select clearing (background) color */
    glClearColor (0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0);

/*  initialize viewing values  */
    glMatrixMode(GL_PROJECTION);
    glLoadIdentity();
    glOrtho(0.0, 1.0, 0.0, 1.0, -1.0, 1.0);
}

/*
 * Declare initial window size, position, and display mode
 * (single buffer and RGBA). Open window with “hello”
 * in its title bar. Call initialization routines.
 * Register callback function to display graphics.
 * Enter main loop and process events.
 */
int main(int argc, char** argv)
{
    glutInit(&argc, argv);
    glutInitDisplayMode (GLUT_SINGLE | GLUT_RGB);
    glutInitWindowSize (250, 250);
    glutInitWindowPosition (100, 100);
    glutCreateWindow ("hello");
    init ();
    glutDisplayFunc(display);
    glutMainLoop();
    return 0; /* ISO C requires main to return int. */
}

It returns Linker Errors like

[Linker error] undefined reference to `_imp____glutInitWithExit@12’

I use dev c++.

PS even if i do not edit the code the same errors occur…

That’s why you’re not linking glut to your project. Did you try the compiler flag -lglut?

Well, I am a complete openGL newbie so I have absolutely no idea what you meant. Does that mean I should make a change in my code? If so, could you please mention where and what change should i make?

A linker error doesn’t mean your code is wrong. It just mean that the compiler wasn’t able to find some function, in this case glutInitWithExit.

Glut is a utility library that abstract the concept behind a window system making easy creation of windows to show OpenGL stuff.

Check if you have glut32.lib in your computer. If so, go to the linker options of your IDE and try to point to that file. Each IDE has a way to accomplish that, check Dev’s way.
