GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

What the hell do i supouse to do now??
I’ve a Trident 9880 8Mb ??

Does anybody have solve this problem yet?

Has anybody other than Scarecrow2564 tried changing their color depth to 16-bit?

Sometimes the Windows init code for OpenGL can’t switch color depths, so if you set your game to run in 16-bit color and your desktop to 32-bit, that might cause these problems.

Try changing your desktop color depth to 16-bit.

Hey everybody -

Seems like u have all had similar problems to me. Looks like the final word on the subject comes direct from Microsoft themselves, but I warn u, u may not like the news.

Search Microsoft On-Line Knowledge base for article Q247430

I wouldn’t be suprised if all the graphics card drivers that don’t work, are not compatible in the same sort of way as is specified in this article.

The article mentions that the drivers supplied by the graphics card manufacturers don’t support the Open GL standard.

Exactly whether this is Microsoft’s problem, or someone elses problem isn’t clear, but its a bit of an oversight if you ask me!!!

That really shouldn’t be a problem if you use the Detonator drivers from NVIDIA.

It sounds like Microsoft is saying that the drivers they included with the OS are faulty, so any other drivers should be fine.

Besides, people are having this problem with a whole bunch of different cards.

Like I said before, try changing the color depth on your screen.

Hi, I’m running an nVidia Tornado 32MB AGP on Win2k which was working fine on my old motherboard. I got a new motherboard and there seems to be a compatibility issue with OpenGL. I can run Direct3D and all other programs that are graphics intensive, but once I try to load OpenGL games, the system balks. Suggestions?

Thnku Minchen

DOing this:
Open the win.ini and search for the string “DVA” then set an smikolon in front of DVA and save the win.ini

fixed the blasted OpenGl subsystem prob.

Smikolon?

Thanks for the hint of the smikcolon

GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

Thats what happens when i load quake3arena.
i´ve got PII 266, w98 SEcond edit. ATi
Rage IIC AGP.
What can i do , please heeeelllpppp.
ANY HELP, EMAIL ME AT: eduran@ono.com
please

I have had that problem, cause my second monitor was acive. I deactivated the sec. Monitor and Q3 works perfect.

My problem was similar (W2K giving open GL grief in Q3…) but downloading the detonator patch for my TNT has done the trick (and it’s increased the Q3 fr). I haven’t got SP1 for W2K, and Q3 was only patched to 1.16 when I got it working, so it seems that graphics card manufacturers have taken the W2K OpenGL problems in to their own hands (certainly NVIDIA).

Thanks for the advice posted here…

Ok folks,

I had this problem in FAKK2 and in Alice But never in Q III or in Elite Force (btw i have a MatroxG400 DH with driver 6.21.003) What i did in FAKK2 is enabeling vertex lighting and composite vertex array(?) and the game started up correctly( before the environment/world textures didnt appear and were malformed). Alice ,in default mode, was totally gray/pale with all the textures/mappings disabled and no option to enable them in the game. I manually altered the config file(Base folder)with all the GL extensions on (“1”) there are just a few possibilities but it turned out fine and now both games run ok, not perfect but playable. So if annyone knows how to change variables through the console,or how to tweak, please post them.

T.

I solved the problem with the Quake III engine where it says “could not load OpenGL subsystem”.

I had the problem with the demo of Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2 running under win95 and using the 3D Prophet (GeForce 1).

First of all I installed the newest drivers from NVidia (detonator 3, version 6.31). This helped a little but did not yet start the game.
After that I followed the instructions in one of the posts down here:

Open the win.ini and search for the string “DVA” then set an smikolon in front of DVA and save the win.ini.

After that FAKK 2 started perfectly. I haven´t yet tried it with Star Trek Elite Force Demo or the Quake III Demo but I think it should work also with both of them.

Hope anyone else will be as successful as I was.

HEY BUD, THIS WORKED FOR ME. I HAVE A RIVA TNT AND ADDED THE “;” IN FRONT OF THE DVD IN MY WIN.INI FILE (FOUND IN YOUR WINDOWS DIRECTORY) AND SAVED. ALL MY GAMES WORK FINE NOW. YOU DONT KNOW HOW MANY PAGES AND SITES I’VE LOOKED AT AND IT IS AMAZING THAT THAT LITTLE ADDITION FIXES THE PROBLEM. THANKS AGAIN

i have been looking in my win.ini file and i dont have a line that has the DVA line in it, i am running win 2k also and getting the same error message about the opengl subsystem. If anyone can tell me where to put it or something that i can do i would greatly appreciate it.

The same happened to me but with the Quake 3 Arena Demo. Can’t find a solution for this problem.

and to think that OpenGL is STILL a beta product on a PC… hehe

I did what you all said, and have no problems… as a matter of fact, I reqworked a few APPLE drivers… and they work GREAT on a PC get a G4 with a Anihhilator 2 like i have… and a gigabyte network?.. it makes the PC patform look like an Atari5200… hehe

Enjoy trying to figure out PC-will-always-be-beta-ware stick you Direct3D where PC’s should be… you’re trying to make a graphics environment on an ascii based system… it’s just TOO much patching!
