translating DTED data into opengl

am newbie with opengl;

am trying to translate DTED file into OpenGL, but i dont know where to get started with -_-

i wanna do it in effeciant way since i want to create a 3D terrain out of it …

i cant find any examples to read the DTED file in opengl;
any direction or help is highly appricated;

According to this DTED is similar to USGS DEM, that would help to find suitable examples.
