shading in opengl

i rotated a polyline to form a wireframe model. this works fine. but when i try to smooth shade the 3D wireframe object, i cant see ANYTHING at all on the screen, though the same code works on windows machine.
please tell me how to enable shading in 3 d on os x.
i’m using opengl with glut.

yes, sure. i am using the cocoa framework, with opengl and glut.
