Selective AntiAliasing

I am running Redhat Linux, with a GeForce4.
Turning on antialiasing, at different levels, has an obvious increased drag on the draw. This is expected.

I was wondering about selectively antialiasing certain parts of my scene, through software. Is there a preferred method of drawing to another buffer several times (jiggling the position a bit), then sampling that and drawing it into the scene?

I thought I read somewhere that you could do this with the accumulation buffer.

Does anybody know of a good link to research this?
