rendering a 3DS or MultiGen file

Hello All,
I have a requirement to render the contents of several 3DS and MultiGen files. Can I use OpenGL to read the files and render these types of files? What file formats are supported in OpenGL? Do I have to use GLU, GLUX, GLUT?

I think 3DS file format is an old format type. However, it is easy to understand about the file structure and, therefore, good for learning about developing parser or something.
