Redhat9 NvidiaFX5200 OpenGL and SDL (if needed)

First, I am new to linux and to OpenGL. I have successfully installed:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run
SDL-1.2.7-1.i386.rpm

When I run the test program “./testgl”, it reads “No OpenGL support on this system.”

I tried to install Mesa-6.2 and
glut-3.7-12.src.rpm
glut_data-3.7.tar.gz
glut-devel-3.7-12.i386.rpm

but I recieved errors when trying to install/compile them.

So my questions are:

How do I get support for openGL in my current situation?

Which are recommended for fast 3d graphic programming in linux?

I have followed your other posts on the linux forum
and I have concluded that you are having major
configuration and installation problems. I see you
are using RedHat with nVidia drivers, neither of
which I use, and so I cannot help much. However,
I can offer some ideas on how to diagnose your problems.

What does the “testgl” do? Is it a script that
searches for files, or is it a binary that tries
to do stuff? Start from there. If it is a script,
see what it is looking for and why it fails. If it
is a binary, do a ‘ldd testgl’ so that you can see
what kind of libraries it uses and make sure it
finds them all. (you should be able to get OpenGL
support, at least with MESA)

Do a ‘ls /usr/X11R6/lib | grep GL’ and see if those
required libraries are there. Also, try to get some
extra information about your X11 windowing system
and its DRI support using ‘glxinfo’ etc.

testgl is a binary that came with SDL, it looks like it runs several tests using graphics.

I ran “ldd testgl” and the following was returned:

From looking at your output of glxinfo - the nVidia drivers seems to be installed ok. you DO NOT NEED Mesa3D.

libSDL and/or glut are ok - what problems/errors are you getting when attempting them to install ?

Well, since much of the feedback indicated that there was a problem with my systems configuration. I decided to wipe redhat and give Gentoo a try (it was recommended by a classmate). When emerging the kde package (which is still going after an hour hehe) I noticed mesa a few times while screen was scrolling, so maybe this distro with fix my problems. Thanks so much for you help!

First of all, RedHat should be a relatively safe play,
so switching to gentoo is just making things more
complicated for yourself. Because RedHat is so much
more popular than any other distribution, I would say
that if you cannot get things working under RedHat
you probably will encounter the same problems with
other distros. I could be dead wrong too.

It looks like your libraries are in place and your
program is using them just fine (judging from your
ldd output).
I really have no clue…

Gentoo’s online handbook made compiling the kernel, which I had never attempted, a snap. I installed gentoo, kde, and the latest nvidia drivers, with no problem. After creating/updating my xorg.conf file, everything seems stable and fast!

I am compiling the linux glx tutorial code, from Nehe’s, without any problems. I am learning openGL on linux, and I am a happy person, thanks again!
