This is probably offtopic, and I’m not sure anyone will be able to answer on a message board, but…
Does anyone know of any extension plans to implement pixel shaders in GL? NVidia have had a spec. for NV_Vertex_Program, a vertex shader extension, on their website since late last year, but no drivers support it yet. Any likelyhood of a NV_Pixel_Program (or ATI_Pixel_Program or *_Pixel_Program…). I am aware of the NV_Register_Combiners extension, but that’s not as flexible as a proper pixel shader implementation, as far as I know.
I ask for both practical and selfish reasons. The practical: we’re hoping to do some very high quality real-time stuff for the company I’m working for, and at present we have a functionality level pretty comparable to Q3s shaders. We have a mechanism for swapping between Direct3d and OpenGL, but we want to take the shader interface to the ‘next level’ (i.e. a renderman style language compiled down to pixel shaders), and I’d like to know how this functionality might manifest itself in GL.
The selfish reason: pixel shaders are cool, and I want to play with them
Cheers,
Henry
