just wondering for years...

how do the people that make stuff like q2 and half life make it to where you can actually WALK around the map full of objects and they buzz by you? not just sit there…?
AND back in the old days of quake 1 how did they make software rendered stuff?

Movement around maps ? Easy, just move the camera (or use glTranslate ) to let the scene actually move.

Software rendering, there are lots of tutorials on that one. Back in my dos days, I wrote a 3D engine in watcom. But what part about sr would you like to know ?
