generally when someone downloads source files off the internet what steps are pretty common in accessing these files, compiling them and running the binaries, i am new and i would like to get a default handle on how i should compile code i get off the internet
Most programs comes with a makefile. You can read the documentation for the tools by typing info also man is available. I think it was a thread about makefiles recently.
